Bayfield County, Wisconsin

Multi Building Microgrid

2021-Present

muGrid Analytics performed a feasibility study and preliminary design for a multi-building microgrid comprising two county buildings. This project will be one of the first to demonstrate Xcel Energy’s microgrid program. muGrid’s modeling, analysis, and design won a $265,000 grant from the Wisconsin Office of Energy Innovation for implementation and was commissioned on November 10, 2023. muGrid Analytics assisted the County from start to finish, from performing the feasibility analysis to providing project management, engineering, and actively manage th operation of the battery with Redcloud EMS. Redcloud is expected to reduce the County’s utility demand and energy costs by charging the battery when energy rates are low and discharging during periods when demand is high or when solar is producing less due to clouds or snow cover. This project was funded by WI OEI through EIGP and was awarded a place on RENEW Wisconsin’s 2023 Clean Energy Honor Roll.

muGrid has also conducted analysis, design, and operational dispatch studies for a second microgrid at the county garage incorporating EV charging for electrification of the county vehicle fleet. This project has also been awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Office of Energy Innovation for implementation and, at present, is in final design and construction. The system is expected to be commissioned in winter 2024. muGrid Analytics provides project management and engineering and will provide optimized economic dispatch control and operations with Redcloud EMS. This project is also funded by WI OEI.
